Just like the stars who fled Los Angeles since the 1920s for some privacy, solitude, and warmer temperatures, we were fleeing 60-degree LA weather in late spring for 90-degree unwavering sunshine in the desert. Natural hot mineral springs, dry heat, and the arrival of the train all may have been reasons the city of Palm Springs popped up in this desert oasis, cupped by the shadow of the San Jacinto Mountains. There are many reasons we have found ourselves returning to the lure of the desert but this time the two-and-a-half-hour drive was to unwind and soak up the heat poolside at one of Palm Springs mid-century modern icons – the Del Marcos Hotel.

If you are looking for a child-free pool without the wild spring breakers, Del Marcos Hotel might be the one for you. Vogue editor Corey Seymour finds the spot more mellow than your typical desert spot, and he appreciated the well-curated selection of Golden Era songs played at the perfect volume. 10. Del Marcos Hotel, a Romantic Getaway from San Diego, California. Del Marcos Hotel is one of Palm Springs' hippest 21-and-up hotel offerings, housed within a 1947 stone and redwood building conveniently located near top attractions such as the city's iconic Aerial Tramway.

Coming closer to my ideal is the 17-room Del Marcos, a groundbreaking example of desert modernism when it was designed by the architect William F. Cody in 1947; the heated saltwater pool is situated squarely in the midst of a U-shaped building constructed from local stone, redwood and glass. The saltwater in the pool makes a difference, I think. It feels a little like a secret — like smuggling in an imaginary vial of ocean all your own, here in the middle of the desert.
